Summary

The Perkins Overpass area is a popular destination for the people of Baton Rouge. However, as other Better Block BR demonstrations have shown, improving safety and access for all kinds of transportation can increase the vibrancy of the community. Preliminary meetings with nearby residents and merchants helped shape the demonstration design and the public had various opportunities to give feedback on what works best.

A project mirroring the Better Block BR Government Street demonstration, the Perkins Overpass Better Block was a weekend demonstration that temporarily transformed two blocks of Perkins Road. The demonstrations included streetscape improvements like temporary parking, sidewalks, crosswalks, landscaping, and a pop up park created by BREC to gather feedback and inform any future permanent improvements.

Outcome

Residents and patrons were able to see their ideas in action by walking, biking, or driving through the area and participating in interactive artwork and using public gathering spaces. It gave a chance for people who are otherwise not involved in city planning and implementation to be engaged to deliver that feedback to policymakers and elected officials.
