Summary

CPEX successfully engaged the Mayor’s office in Baton Rouge as a key partner in the Better Block BR Government Street project in April 2013. By working with city agencies such as the Baton Rouge Planning Commission and Department of Public Works, CPEX completed an unprecedented 2-block Complete Streets demonstration along a disinvested corridor in Baton Rouge. The demonstration explored possibilities for transforming the corridor into a vibrant and safe destination for pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining quality road design that optimizes traffic flow and access to businesses. This project has led to outcomes that will transform the street design for the highly utilized corridor.

Outcome

In March 2014, the city announced the transfer of the roadway from the DOTD to the city, allowing for a design upgrade. CPEX has continued to work with the Department of Transportation and Development, consulting engineers, Capital Area Transit, business owners, and neighborhood associations to ensure that the implementation is as high quality as possible. Since the Better Block demonstration, over 48 new businesses and restaurants have populated the corridor, and road construction will be complete in 2019.
