Summary

While the Town of Jean Lafitte, Louisiana, is at increased risk of flooding and storm surge, its residents and community remain determined to preserve their strong heritage, celebrate their culture, and build on the foundation laid generations ago to be a vibrant and thriving community.

To capitalize on its unique qualities, the Town of Jean Lafitte recognized the value of planning for future land use, including housing, transportation, economic development, and hazard mitigation. With local and state funding from the Louisiana Office of Community Development – Disaster Recovery under the Comprehensive Resiliency Program, the town created Jean Lafitte Tomorrow.

Jean Lafitte Tomorrow is the result of a public planning process with significant stakeholder involvement and nearly 20% public participation, and it guides the town’s future investments.

CPEX provided technical assistance for the solicitation of a planning firm to develop the plan, public outreach and engagement, client, benefactor, and consultant coordination, as well as grant administration.

Outcome

In May 2013, the Jean Lafitte Tomorrow Plan was unanimously adopted by the Jean Lafitte Town Council. The plan’s implementation is  underway, including updates to codes.
