Summary

The Town of Jean Lafitte, LA is located at the extreme southeast of the state and has experienced its share of flooding from storm surge, heavy rain events, and relative sea level rise. Due to climate change, this risk is only increasing.

To address this growing risk, town leadership is using both structural risk reduction measures — such as levees, locks, and pumps — and planning and implementation measures — such as community development plans and development regulations.

Through the Silver Jacket Program, CPEX worked with the town and the Silver Jackets to develop the Flood Preparedness Toolkit. The Toolkit provides information, guidelines and recommended regulations to reduce flood risk also suggested in the separate Flood Emergency Preparedness Plan, created for the town the previous year by CPEX.

Outcome

The Town of Jean Lafitte has adopted higher regulatory ordinances to decrease flood risk and reduce impacts of development on local hydrology.
