Summary

Town of Jean Lafitte, LA is located at the extreme southeast of the state and has experienced its share of flooding from storm surge, heavy rain events, and relative sea level rise. Due to climate change, this risk is only increasing.

To address this growing risk, town leadership is using both structural risk reduction measures — such as levees, locks, and pumps — and planning and implementation measures — such as community development plans and development regulations.

Through the Silver Jacket Program, CPEX worked with the town, state agencies, and the Silver Jackets to develop the Flood Emergency Preparedness Plan (FEPP). The FEPP leverages existing planning work and risk reduction strategies at the state, parish, and municipal level to situate risk reduction projects and programs within Jean Lafitte’s unique risk profile.

The FEPP also makes recommendations how the implementation of strategies can earn points through the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System (CRS), which Jean Lafitte participates in.

Outcome

Through this work, Town of Jean Lafitte has increased its CRS rating, which lowers flood insurance premiums for policy holderes in Jean Lafitte.
